 STATE OF ALASKA HUNTING AND TRAPPING SEASONS FOR WOLF CLOSED IN UNIT 2FEDERAL SUBSISTENCE HUNTING AND TRAPPING SEASONS FOR WOLF CLOSED ON FEDERAL LANDS WITHIN UNIT 2Craig, Alaska— The Thorne Bay and Craig Districts Ranger, Matt Anderson, under authority delegated by the Federal Subsistence Board, will close the Federal public lands of Unit 2 to the harvest of wolf from 11:59 P.M., Saturday, December 16, 2017 until 11:59 P.M., March 31, 2018. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) will close the state wolf hunting and trapping seasons in Unit 2 at 11:59 P.M. on Saturday, December 16, 2017.

Temporary Special Action Request WSA17-05 for Unit 12 Remainder Caribou Harvest Limit Increase Withdrawn by Proponent

Temporary Special Action request WSA17-05, submitted by the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge, requested that the harvest limit be increased from 1 caribou to “up to 2 caribou” and that the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge Manager, in consultation with the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve Superintendent, Alaska Department of Fish and Game area biologists, and Chairs of the Eastern Interior Alaska Subsistence Regional Advisory Council and Upper Tanana/Fortymile Fish and Game Advisory Committee, be delegated authority to set the harvest limit for the to-be-announced winter caribou season in Unit 12 remainder for the 2017/18 regulatory year.  This request targeted the Nelchina caribou herd, which currently exceeds State population objectives.

Cold Storage zone on Baranof Island in Unit 4 to close to the harvest of mountain goats

SITKA, Alaska–The Sitka District Ranger, under authority delegated by the Federal Subsistence Board, is closing the Cold Storage zone to the harvest of mountain goats. The closure will be effective at 11:59 p.m., Wednesday November 22, 2017 and continue through the remainder of the 2017 season which ends December 31. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) has issued a concurrent closure in the same zone.

Plans Announced for Winter Federal Subsistence Moose Hunt in a Portion of Unit 11

Copper Center, AK – Plans for a winter federal subsistence hunt for moose in a portion of Unit 11 were announced on October 23 by Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve Superintendent Ben Bobowski, the designated federal manager for the hunt. The Federal Subsistence Board established this hunt at its April 2014 meeting. For the 2017 hunt, the harvest quota is 7 bull moose. The hunt will open on November 20 and close on December 20 or earlier if the quota has been reached.
