Federal subsistence moose hunting season closed in portion of Unit 5A

YAKUTAT, Alaska - Yakutat District Ranger Lee Benson, under authority delegated by the Federal Subsistence Board, is closing the 2020 Federal subsistence moose season for that portion of Unit 5A west of the Dangerous River, except the Nunatak Bench, effective Oct. 12, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) will implement a concurrent closure for the State season.

2020 Yukon River Salmon Fall Fishery Announcement #31 Subdistrict 6-C Personal Use Fishing

Districts Affected: Upper Yukon AreaThis year’s fall chum salmon run fell below the threshold needed to allow personal use salmon fishing. The fall chum salmon run migration is essentially complete in Subdistrict 6-C. Personal use fishing for salmon and whitefish/suckers is being allowed in a reduced area of the Tanana River to provide fishing opportunity on other fish species while protecting fall chum salmon spawning locations.

Mountain goat harvest closed in Upper Blue Lake Zone on Baranof Island

SITKA, Alaska – Sitka District Ranger Perry Edwards, under authority delegated by the Federal Subsistence Board, is closing the Upper Blue Lake Zone to the harvest of mountain goats. The closure will be effective Sunday, October 11, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. and will remain in effect through the rest of the 2020 season which ends December 31, 2020.

2020 Yukon River Salmon Fall Fishery Announcement #29 Subdistrict 5-D Upper Subsistence Fishing

Districts Affected: Upper Yukon AreaThis year’s fall chum salmon run fell below the 300,000 fish threshold needed to allow subsistence fishing. In accordance with the Yukon River Fall Chum Salmon Management Plan, subsistence fishing for fall chum salmon has been closed for most of the season. As the end of the 2020 fall chum salmon run is complete in Subdistrict 5- D Upper, subsistence fishing restrictions are being relaxed to provide fishing opportunity for other fish species.

Plans Announced for Winter Federal Subsistence Moose Hunt in a Portion of Unit 11

COPPER CENTER, AK – Plans for the winter federal subsistence hunt for moose in a portion of Unit 11 were announced on October 8 by Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve Superintendent Ben Bobowski, the designated federal manager for the hunt. For the 2020 hunt, the harvest quota is 7 bull moose. The hunt will open on November 20 and close on January 20 or earlier if the quota has been reached. Hunters are asked to report back within three days of harvesting an animal or at the end of the season if unsuccessful. For recorded information about the status of the hunt, hunters can call 822-7203.

Districts Affected: Upper Yukon AreaThis year’s fall chum salmon run fell below the 300,000 fish threshold needed to allow subsistence fishing. In accordance with the Yukon River Fall Chum Salmon Management Plan, subsistence fishing for fall chum salmon has been closed for most of the season. The fall chum salmon run is currently estimated to be around 200,000 fish, the lowest on record. Because the fall chum salmon run migration is essentially complete in Subdistricts 6- A and 6-B, subsistence fishing restrictions are being relaxed in the mainstem of the Tanana River to provide fishing opportunity for other fish species.
