2017 Yukon River Fall Salmon Fishery News Release # 22 District 2 Commercial Period 5

Districts Affected: Lower Yukon AreaFall Season Emergency Order # 21District 2 Commercial Fishing:Commercial fishing will be open for one period in District 2, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Friday, August 4. This will be a 4-hour commercial fishing period with gillnets restricted to 6-inch or smaller mesh size. Commercial fishermen should confirm their buyer before they fish. There will be no tenders operating for this commercial period. Fishermen will only be able to make deliveries to buying stations at St. Mary’s and Mountain Village.

Cow Moose Harvest Quota Established for Unit 15C

The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Manager, under authority delegated by the Federal Subsistence Board, has established a harvest quota of eight (8) cow moose for Federal public lands within the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge in Game Management Unit 15C. The quota is effective for the 2017 Federal subsistence moose season, which runs August 10-September 20, by Federal registration permit only. The season will be closed to the harvest of cow moose once the quota is met. The harvest of spike-fork bull moose or bull moose with 50-inch antlers, or with 3 or more brow tines on either antler, will still be allowed.

Amendment of Chitina Subdistrict Federal Subsistence Fishing Schedule Announced

Copper Center, AK. The pre-season fishing schedule for Federally qualified subsistence users in the Chitina Subdistrict of the Copper River was amended today by the inseason manager through delegated authority granted by the Federal Subsistence Board. This season schedule is identical to the State season schedule and is subject to change based on numbers of salmon entering the Copper River.

Districts Affected: Yukon AreaFall Season AssessmentThe 2017 fall chum salmon preseason projection is for a run size greater than 1.1 million fish.  This level of abundance should be sufficient to provide for escapement, an average subsistence harvest, and a surplus available for commercial and personal use purposes. The estimated fall chum salmon run size through July 30 (based on the mainstem sonar near Pilot Station and the downstream harvest) is estimated to be 388,800 fish, which is above the historical median of 160,000 fish for that date.

Districts Affected: Lower Yukon AreaNotice to District 2 Commercial Fishermen:Only one buyer located at Mountain Village will be operating for the previously announced commercial period in District 2, from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., Monday, July 31. The department received notice that the St. Mary’s buying station will not be able to purchase fish for this commercial period. Commercial fishermen intending to fish this period are still able to pick up ice from the St. Mary’s buying station today.
