2018 Yukon River Fall Salmon Fishery News Release # 18 - Subdistricts 5-A, 5-B, and 5-C Subsistence Fishing Schedule

Districts Affected: Upper Yukon AreaThe 2018 fall chum salmon preseason run projection, based on the summer chum to fall chum salmon relationship, is for a run size of 700,000 to 900,000 fish. This level of abundance is anticipated to be sufficient to meet escapement and subsistence needs and provide a surplus for commercial and personal use purposes. Consistent with transitioning to fall season management, the following management actions will occur in Subdistricts 5-A, 5-B, & 5-C.

2018 Yukon River Fall Salmon Fishery News Release # 15 - Fall Update # 2, Yukon Area Salmon Fishery

Districts Affected: Yukon AreaThe 2018 fall chum salmon preseason run projection is for a run size of 700,000 to 900,000 fish. This level of abundance is anticipated to be sufficient to meet escapement and subsistence needs and provide a surplus for commercial and personal use purposes. The estimated reconstructed fall chum salmon run size through July 28 (based on the mainstem sonar near Pilot Station and the downstream harvest) is estimated to be 167,000 fish, which is above the historical median of 143,000 fish for that date. The front of the fall season chum salmon run that entered the Yukon River on July 19 is expected to be near Kaltag on July 31, Galena around August 2, and Tanana/Huslia around August 7, Rampart around August 9 and the Canadian border around August 27.

Portions of Baranof Island in Unit 4 to close to the harvest of mountain goats

SITKA, Alaska – The Sitka District Ranger, under authority delegated by the Federal Subsistence Board, is closing the following zones to the harvest of mountain goats: The Pyramids, Slaughter Ridge (Lisa Creek), Indian River, Rosenberg Lake, Lake Irina, Indigo Lake, Necker Bay, Lucky Chance, North Kelp Bay, and South Baranof. The closure will be effective Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. and will remain in effect through the rest of the 2018 season which ends December 31.

Chignik River Federal Subsistence Fishery for Sockeye Salmon

Reminder: The emergency special action (8-SS-01-18), which closed Federal public waters of the Chignik River drainage to the harvest of Sockeye Salmon except by Federally qualified subsistence users who are in the possession of a Social and Cultural Harvest Permit, will expire at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday July 31, 2018. Beginning 12:00 a.m. on Wednesday August 1, 2018 there will be no restrictions to Sockeye Salmon harvest on Federal public waters of the Chignik River drainage.
