2019 Yukon River Fall Salmon Fishery News Release #19 District 2 Commercial Period 5 and Subsistence Schedule

Districts Affected: Lower Yukon AreaThe 2019 fall chum salmon preseason projection, based on the summer chum to fall chum salmon relationship, has been revised to a range of 700,000-800,000 fish. Run sizes within this range are expected to provide for escapement, subsistence needs, and a limited commercial fishery. Fall chum salmon passage at the mainstem sonar near the community of Pilot Station is above the historical median level.

The 2019−2021 Federal subsistence fish and shellfish regulations book is now available online at https://www.doi.gov/subsistence/fisheries. The regulations book contains the Federal subsistence seasons, harvest limits, permit requirements, customary and traditional use determinations, and methods and means of taking fish and shellfish from Federal public waters in Alaska.

Regulations for subsistence take of fish published in Federal Register

On August 12, 2019, the Federal Subsistence Board (Board) published the final rule for the Subsistence Management Regulations for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 Subsistence Taking of Fish in the Federal Register (84 FR 39744). This final rule establishes regulations for seasons, harvest limits, and methods and means related to the taking of fish for subsistence uses in Alaska for 2019–20 and 2020–21 regulatory years. This rule also revises fish customary and traditional use determinations.

Districts Affected: Lower Yukon AreaDistrict 2 Commercial Fishing:The previously announced commercial fishing period is being extended by 3 hours. Commercial fishing will be open for one period in District 2, from 1:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 7. This will be a 9-hour commercial fishing period with the use of gillnets 6-inch or smaller mesh size. Chinook salmon may be sold during these commercial openings. All Chinook salmon sold or retained for subsistence during commercial openings must be recorded on a fish ticket.

Districts Affected: Lower Yukon AreaThe 2019 fall chum salmon preseason projection, based on the summer chum to fall chum salmon relationship, has been revised to a range of 700,000-800,000 fish. Run sizes within this range are expected to provide for escapement, subsistence needs, and a limited commercial fishery. After an extended summer chum salmon run, the number of fall chum salmon entering the Yukon River has increased substantially this past week. The first fall chum salmon pulse began entering the Yukon River on August 3 and is continuing to pass the mainstem sonar near the community of Pilot Station.

Clarence Kramer and Lisa Creek Zones on Baranof Island in Unit 4 are closed to the harvest of mountain goats

SITKA, Alaska – Sitka District Ranger Perry Edwards, under authority delegated by the Federal Subsistence Board, is closing Clarence Kramer and Lisa Creek zones in Unit 4 to the harvest of mountain goats. The closure will be effective Friday, August 9, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. and will remain in effect through the rest of the 2019 season which ends December 31.

Districts Affected: Yukon AreaThe 2019 fall chum salmon preseason projection, based on the summer chum to fall chum salmon relationship, has been revised to a range of 700,000-800,000 fish. Run sizes within this range are expected to provide for escapement, subsistence needs, and a limited commercial fishery. After an extended summer chum salmon run, the number of fall chum salmon entering the Yukon River has increased substantially this past week. The fall chum salmon that entered the Yukon River on August 1 are expected to be near Anvik August 9, Kaltag August 13, Galena August 15, Tanana/Huslia August 20, Rampart August 22, Fort Yukon August 30 and the Canadian border around September 9.
