Public hearing announced for deferred Temporary Wildlife Special Action Request WSA21-01 regarding caribou and moose in Units 23 and 26A

March 9, 2022

In February 2021, the Northwest Arctic Subsistence Regional Advisory Council submitted Wildlife Special Action Request WSA21-01 to close Federal public lands in Units 23 and 26A to the harvest of caribou and moose by non-Federally qualified users from August 1 through September 30, 2021. In June 2021, the Federal Subsistence Board (Board) deferred this request to 2022, instructing the Office of Subsistence Management (OSM) to seek additional input on concerns related to caribou. The Board also asked OSM to include comparisons of moose harvest by survey area within Unit 23 in their analysis.

Entries Sought for Subsistence Student Art Contest

February 23, 2022

The Federal Subsistence Management Program is sponsoring its annual art contest for all students in Alaska grades K-12.  Deadline for submission is April 1, 2022.  This year, entries may focus on either subsistence wildlife or fish, and two winners will be selected.  The winners’ artwork will be published on either the cover of the 2022-2024 Subsistence Management Regulations for the Harvest of Wildlife on Federal Public Lands in Alaska book or the 2023-2025 Subsistence Management Regulations for the Harvest of Fish and Shellfish on Federal Public Lands in Alaska book, both distributed statewide.  The art contest offers an exciting opportunity for students to express their talent and creativity while sharing their knowledge of subsistence resources.

Secretary of the Interior Appoints Members to Federal Subsistence Regional Advisory Councils

Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, with the concurrence of Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, has made appointments to the 10 Federal Subsistence Regional Advisory Councils. The Councils advise the Federal Subsistence Board on subsistence management regulations and policies and serve as a forum for public involvement in Federal subsistence management in Alaska. Results from Federal Subsistence Board Work Session

February 2, 2022 

During their February 1, 2022 work session, the Federal Subsistence Board (Board) took action on the 2022 Fisheries Resource Monitoring Plan and Individual Customary and Traditional Use Determination Proposal ICTP21-02.  The Board also received updates on the Regional Advisory Council annual report reply process review, the Federal Subsistence Management Program budget, and the deferred Wildlife Special Action Request WSA21-01 for Units 23 and 26A.
