Office of Native Hawaiian Relations Releases Native Hawaiian Community Guide to Federal Programs and Services

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Native Hawaiian Relations released the new Native Hawaiian Community Guide to Federal Programs and Services.  The guide identifies Federal program and grant opportunities in health, housing, education, and labor for which members of the Native Hawaiian Community and Native Hawaiian organizations may apply.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Proposes Protections for 10 Animal and 39 Plant Species in the State of Hawaii

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) is proposing to add 49 species in Hawaii to the list of endangered species under the Endangered Species Act. The Service will not be designating Critical Habitat for these species at this time due to insufficient information.

Under the new proposal, the Native Hawaiian community — not the Federal government — would decide whether to reorganize a Native Hawaiian government, what form that government would take, and whether it would seek a government-to-government relationship with the United States.

Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park Welcomes 4th Grade Students Through Every Kid in a Park Initiative

Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park invites all fourth grade students to visit the park for free as part of the White House’s new Every Kid in a Park program. Starting today, fourth grade students can now go to www.everykidinapark.gov to complete an activity and obtain a free annual entry pass to more than 2,000 federal recreation areas, including national parks.

U.S. Census Bureau Interviews Hires for Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander National Health Interview Survey

The US Census Bureau needs to quickly hire interviewers in Hawai’i to work on the NHPI National Health Interview Survey. Most immediate is the need to hire in Hilo, Hawai’i and Oahu, but hiring will also be done on Maui and Kauai.

The Secretary of the Interior will appoint the member from nominations submitted by Indian tribes, Native Hawaiian organizations, and traditional Native American religious leaders. The deadline for receipt of nominations is July 17, 2014.
