STATEMENT FOR THE RECORD OF THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE, U.S. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR, BEFORE THE HOUSE NATURAL RESOURCES SUBCOMMITTEE ON NATIONAL PARKS, FORESTS, AND PUBLIC LANDS, CONCERNING H.R. 7489, A BILL TO AUTHORIZE THE SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR TO CONVEY TO THE COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA CERTAIN FEDERAL LAND UNDER THE ADMINISTRATIVE JURISDICTION OF THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF RAIL AND OTHER INFRASTRUCTURE, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.

July 13, 2020

Chairwoman Haaland, Ranking Member Young, and members of the Subcommittee, thank you for the opportunity to provide the views of the Department of the Interior on H.R. 7489, a bill to authorize the Secretary of the Interior to convey to the Commonwealth of Virginia certain Federal land under the administrative jurisdiction of the National Park Service for the construction of rail and other infrastructure, and for other purposes.

H.R. 7489 was introduced less than two weeks ago.  Because of the short amount of time between bill introduction and this hearing, the Department has not had sufficient time to evaluate the implications of this legislation.  If the Committee decides to move forward with this legislation, we would appreciate having the opportunity to recommend amendments before the Committee acts on it.

Chair Haaland, this concludes our statement.
