What is an IQA Request for Correction and what is the process?

All of the Department of the Interior work to ensure quality information and continuously to be responsive to users of its information. In furtherance of these objectives, the public may submit  a request for correction about the quality of the information it has disseminated. Persons seeking to correct information affecting them that was publicly disseminated by
DOI may submit a Petition for Correction to the DOI Bureau or Office. Submission should be made to the Information Quality Coordinator by e-mail or mail. A member of the public who seeks correction of information under the guidelines has the burden of proof with respect to the necessity for correction as well as with respect to the type of correction requested. Requests for
correction must include:

  • a statement that the communication is a Petition for Correction under the Information Quality Guidelines;
  • identification of the DOI information or DOI information dissemination product, and the specific thereof, that is the subject of the petition;
  • a specific description of how the information does not comply with these OMB guidelines or Government-wide Guidelines and how they are affected by the information;
  • all supporting evidence which the petitioner believes provides a persuasive case and all supporting documentation necessary to resolve the complaint; and
  • the specific corrective action sought, including (if applicable) temporary corrective action pending full resolution of the complaint.
