Funding Opportunity Scoping Sessions

2023 Grants

In 2023, the Office intends to issue a grant solicitation (aka “Notice of Funding Opportunity” or “NOFO”) that fulfills the goals of the Program and is responsive to the Native Hawaiian Community’s (NHC) needs and interests.  In an effort to better understand the needs and interests of the NHC, the Office is seeking input on the scope of the NOFO, including:

  • The types of activities or projects that could be considered for funding,
  • The subject matter or sectors of interest (e.g., resource conservation, culture, health, youth engagement, etc.), and
  • The parameters of the NOFO (e.g., funding levels, term of grants, compliance, technical assistance requirements for applicants).

The Office is conducting a series of in-person and virtual scoping meetings listed below.

Scoping Questions

During each scoping meeting, the Office will provide an overview of the Program and the NOFO, and invite meeting participants to ask questions and provide feedback and comments. To assist in this scoping process, we ask participants to think about and provide input on your organization or community’s needs, interests, and ideas regarding climate change resilience, adaptation, and transformation.  Below are a few questions to assist in beginning this dialogue.

  • What are the types of activities or projects that are needed or desired for funding?
  • What are the subject matter or sectors of interest (e.g., resource conservation, cultural preservation, education, health, youth engagement, etc.)?
  • What are suggested funding level ranges (min. & max.)?
  • Are there preferences for eligibility requirements?
  • Are there preferences for grant periods (1-5 years)?
  • What kinds of technical assistance is needed during the proposal period and post-award?
Next Steps

After the scoping meetings are completed at the end of May, the Office will review the input received to define the parameters and scope of the NOFO.  The drafting and internal DOI review of the NOFO is expected to take several months.  Upon completion, the NOFO will be issued in Grants.Gov and posted to this website with additional information.  The Office will further update this webpage as new information regarding the NOFO becomes available.
