Interior’s Economic Impact on Insular Areas Estimated at $1 billion

Interior has released its fiscal year (FY) 2019 economic report highlighting that Interior activities in the insular areas resulted in $1 billion in economic output and supported 25,334 jobs during FY 2019. “Under the leadership of the Secretary and the President, the overall impact of funding that was provided through the Office of Insular Affairs to the U.S. territories and the freely associated states was significant,” said Assistant Secretary, Insular and International Affairs, Douglas W. Domenech. “The Trump Administration has been very supportive of the insular areas, and it is extremely helpful to see the specific data and reporting in order to better realize the impact of the funding and support from Congress through OIA on the lives of individuals in the islands.”

Executive Leadership Development Program Launches 2021 Cohort with 40 Public Servants from the Pacific and U.S. Virgin Islands

The ELDP is an Interior-funded program that builds leadership capacity in U.S. territories and freely associated states. The new 2021 Cohort is comprised of mid-level management public servants from American Samoa (4), Guam (4), the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (6), the U.S. Virgin Islands (9), the Federated States of Micronesia (7), the Republic of the Marshall Islands (4), the Republic of Palau (6).

Trump Administration Announces $1,786,000 Agreement through Interior to Support Water Projects in the Freely Associated States

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs and the Bureau of Reclamation are providing additional technical assistance for water projects and drought resiliency in the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau. These three sovereign Pacific Island nations, also known as the freely associated states, each have a strong relationship with the United States through a Compact of Free Association.

Bureau of Reclamation Engineers Complete Hydraulic Modelling Assessment for the Majuro Water and Sewer Company in the Marshall Islands

Insular Affairs has partnered with the Bureau of Reclamation for their high-quality technical expertise to develop a hydraulic model with GIS data base and completed an assessment report analyzing and making recommendations for system improvements to the Majuro Water and Sewer Company’s (MWSC) water supply and distribution system on Majuro in the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI). This testifies of the strong relationship the United States shared with the RMI under the Compact of Free Association.

Trump Administration Awards $6,800,000 to Promote Lower Consumer Costs and Greater Energy Efficiency in the U.S. Territories

Energizing Insular Communities grants totaling $6,800,000 will support energy initiatives in the U.S. territories by reducing energy costs and increasing energy efficiency through the replacement of older appliances, analyzing current usage, retrofitting of older buildings, and exploring alternative energy options proposed in territorial Energy Action Plans.

Trump Administration Awards $1,107,654 to Kili-Bikini-Ejit Local Government in the Marshall Islands

Funding will support the Kili-Bikini-Ejit (KBE) Local Government’s efforts to build a sea wall on Ejit Island on Majuro Atoll, and provide equipment and supplies for the health clinic on Kili Island in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. This support will help protect residents on Ejit Islands from severe weather events and help improve basic health care services for residents on Kili Island.
