Gregg D. Renkes

Administrative Judge

Judge Renkes has been a member of the Alaska Bar for 33 years. He is a graduate of Vassar College where he studied biology and geology. He received a Masters of Forest Science from the Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and his law degree from the University of Colorado School of Law where he assisted with the completion of public land law, water law and Federal Indian law casebooks. After a judicial clerkship, he served in the U.S. Senate in various capacities including Chief Counsel, Chief of Staff and Staff Director for the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. He also served as the State of Alaska’s fifteenth Attorney General where he represented Alaska before both state and Federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, and participated in many multi-state litigation efforts. He was a member of Executive Committee for the National Association of Attorneys General and the Conference of Western Attorneys General. His private practice has focused on matters relating to energy, public land, and Federal Indian law and included work as general counsel for a national commercial real estate and energy development company. He comes to the IBLA after having served as Senior Counselor to the Secretary of the Interior.
