Office of the Assistant Secretary for Insular and International Affairs

The Office of the Assistant Secretary  for Insular and International Affairs carries out the Department’s responsibilities regarding the U.S. territories, freely associated states, international technical engagement, and the oceans, Great Lakes, and coasts. The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Insular and International Affairs incorporates the Office of Insular Affairs (OIA), the Office of International Affairs (INT), and the Ocean, Great Lakes, and Coastal Program (Ocean Program).

OIA carries out the Secretary’s responsibilities for the U.S. territories of Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and administers and oversees federal assistance under the Compacts of Free Association (Compact) to the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau. INT facilitates, supports, and coordinates DOI’s international engagement to advance DOI’s mission and support complementary U.S. foreign policy objectives abroad. The Ocean Program mission at DOI is to uphold stewardship responsibilities for the oceans, Great Lakes, and coasts through increased understanding, conservation, responsible use, and collaborative science-based management.

    Covers the U.S. territories of Guam, American, Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and administers and oversees Compact funding to the Freely Associated States of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau.
