The California Air National Guard’s 146th Airlift Wing and the Nevada National Guard’s 152nd Airlift Wing will join the USDA Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management and other firefighting agencies for aerial wildland firefighting training June 15-19 at CAL FIRE’s McClellan Reload Base.

Fighting wildfires during a pandemic seems a little like the paradox of an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object. Wildfires and a virus as two forces of nature putting first responders in an impossible situation. But focusing on this stark choice of dueling threats tends to obscure one of humankinds’ greatest gifts: flexibility. Our ability to react and adapt, making small changes to our routines so we bend instead of breaking.

Mantén Viva la Llama' - 'Keep the Flame Alive!’ describes the theme of the Spanish Language Training Exchange (TREX) held near Santa Fe, New Mexico in October of 2019. The two week TREX program brings diverse fire practitioners from many Spanish speaking countries, including Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Spain, together to build skills in prescribed fire, fire management, and fire ecology.

The 2019-2020 season was one of the worst fire seasons on record in Australia. By November, Australia requested international assistance to suppress the thousands of fires on the landscape. Over the course of four months, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service provided 11 individuals to assist in suppression efforts.
