Emergency Wildlife Special Action WSA22-03, submitted by the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge Manager, on behalf of the Northway Village Council and Northway Natives Inc., requested that the moose season in the Federal hunt FM1203 areas of Unit 12, be extended to September 30th. The Board approved the request with modification to extend the season to October 10th, recognizing that the time needed to process a special action prevented Federally qualified subsistence users from utilizing the full ten days of their request.

This action responded to local Federally qualified subsistence users who expressed a dire need for moose this year. Local residents have observed that the beginning of the rut is starting later each year. Therefore, bull moose are not moving around in the area until later, making them less available for harvest. The Board noted that the moose population can withstand additional harvest and the harvestable surplus has not been met. Extending the season will provide a meaningful opportunity to Federally qualified subsistence users to harvest moose in the area.
