2018 Yukon River Fall Salmon Fishery News Release # 11 - District 1 Commercial Period 4 and Subsistence Schedule

Districts Affected: Lower Yukon Area

The 2018 fall chum salmon preseason run projection is for a run size of 700,000 to 900,000 fish. This level of abundance is anticipated to be sufficient to meet escapement and subsistence needs and provide a surplus for commercial and personal use purposes.

District 1 Commercial Fishing:

Commercial fishing will open for the fall season for one period in the Set Net Only Area of District 1 on Thursday, July 26 from 3:00 p.m. until 12:00 midnight. This will be a 9-hour commercial fishing period for the Set Net Only Area with 6-inch or smaller mesh gillnets. The remainder of District 1 will be open to commercial fishing on Thursday, July 26 from 6:00 p.m. until 12:00 midnight. This will be a 6-hour commercial fishing period with 6-inch or smaller mesh gillnets. The sale of incidentally caught Chinook salmon is prohibited. All Chinook salmon kept for personal use must be recorded on a fish ticket.

Pastolik and Pastoliak Rivers:

The Pastolik and Pastoliak rivers near Apoon Pass, including 500 yards around their mouths, are closed to commercial fishing, (see map below). Also, subsistence fishing with gillnets, including gillnets with 4-inch mesh or less, is closed in these waters 12 hours before, during, and 12 hours after each commercial opening.

Preliminary reports from the District 1 commercial opening on July 23 indicate a harvest of 920 fall chum salmon from 64 permit holders. The preliminary cumulative commercial harvest for District 1 is 32,643 fall chum salmon.

District 1 Subsistence Fishing:

Subsistence salmon fishing in District 1, is open during the fall season 7 days per week, 24 hours per day with gillnets restricted to a maximum mesh size of 7.5 inches, except for 12 hours before, during, and 12 hours after each commercial fishing period. Subsistence salmon fishing in District 1, including the Pastolik and Pastoliak Rivers, will close at 3:00 a.m. Thursday, July 26, and reopen at 12:00 noon Friday, July 27.
