Interior Department Releases Blueprint for Central Utah Project’s Implementation of Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in 2022

$50 million investment will expedite completion of critical water infrastructure

WASHINGTON — The Department of the Interior today announced $50 million made available through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to the Central Utah Project Completion Act, which will accelerate critical investments in constructing the Central Utah Project water delivery pipelines, completing of the Provo River Delta Restoration Project, and providing habitat restoration for a threatened fish species and recreational access to this restored natural environment.

A total of $40 million is allocated to the Central Utah Project Completion Account, and $10 million is allocated for the Mitigation and Conservation Account. This will supplement the funding allocated on an annual basis for the project and will accelerate the progress for completion of this essential infrastructure to bring clean, reliable drinking water to Central Utah communities.

“The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provides significant funding to help address growing challenges associated with drought and climate change throughout the West,” said Assistant Secretary for Water and Science Tanya Trujillo.  “I’m very pleased that we are able to expeditiously provide this additional funding to accelerate the construction of the Central Utah Project water delivery system, and complete additional restoration projects that will benefit threatened species and provide access to nature and recreation opportunities for Utah communities.”    

The FY 2022 spend plan allocations include:  

Central Utah Project Completion Account:

  • $38.2 million for Utah Lake System. Includes construction of two pipeline reaches (South Fields Reach 2 and the Salem Reach 1) and will provide water to over 100,000 people in south Utah County as well as water for fish and wildlife, endangered species and recreation. 
  • $1.5 million for Sixth Water Flow Control Structure. Upon project completion, minimum stream flows will be provided in Sixth Water and Diamond Fork Creeks to support the fishery and riparian areas. 
  • $300,000 for Fish and Wildlife Mitigation. Will provide competitive grants for the fish and wildlife mitigation and will provide for ongoing fish and wildlife projects. 

Utah Reclamation Mitigation and Conservation Account:

  • $4.3 million for Completing Construction of Provo Delta Restoration Project  
  • $3 million for Construction of Provo Lakeview Parkway and Trail  
  • $2.7 million for Construction of Provo River Delta Gateway Park
