Interior Applauds U.S. Virgin Islands Graduates of Executive Leadership Program

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs applauds and congratulates seven new graduates from the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) who successfully completed the Executive Leadership Program (ELP). A virtual commencement honoring these current and future leaders in public service was held on Friday June 11, 2021.

The U.S. Department of the Interior has announced $3,866,108 in grant funding to the American Samoa government from the U.S. Department of the Interior’s (DOI) Office of Insular Affairs’ Technical Assistance Program, Maintenance Assistance Program, and CARES Act funding for fiscal year 2021.

President Biden Proposes $684 Million in FY 2022 Budget for the U.S. Territories and the Freely Associated States

The OIA budget proposal includes $122 million in current appropriations and $562 million in permanent funding. The OIA budget includes an increase of $7 million for clean energy and grid infrastructure development with an emphasis on climate resilience and conservation in the Insular Areas.

Gift to Interior Museum Highlights History Made by First Pacific Islander in Challenger Deep

Ms. Yamase has gifted items to the Interior Museum that include a  polystyrene cup with "Micronesia", "United We Stand," and the names of the Micronesian islands written on it that accompanied her on the outside of the Deep Submergence Vehicle (DSV) Limiting Factor and has shrunk to the size of a large thimble, visibly demonstrating the effects of ocean pressure.

 

Interior Augments U.S. Support to the Republic of Palau with $300,000 for Recovery from Typhoon Surigae

The funds will be used to rehabilitate and repair schools and health-care facilities that were damaged by Typhoon Surigae to include roofs, walkways, water tanks and pumps, windows, signage, and other related equipment.

Interior Supports Training for Island Government Finance Officers – Audits Improve, Reconciliation and Procurement Issues Remain

The insular governments have achieved improvements to the quality of their audits, with the number of financial statement and federal compliance modifications (previously called ‘qualifications’) declining by half over the past ten years. However, basic financial statement reconciliations and procurement violations continue to be significant issues.

The primary goal of this grant is build the foundation necessary to implement unemployment benefits to the people of the CNMI and enhance the CNMI’s Management of Disaster Pandemic Assistance programs.
