2019 Yukon River Salmon Fishery News Release #10 Districts 1, 2 and 3 Subsistence Fishing Schedule

Districts Affected: Lower Yukon Area

So far the 2019 Chinook appears similar to the 2018 Chinook run size, and restrictions to harvest will likely be required to meet escapement goals and harvest share objectives. The subsistence fishing schedule remains reduced to half the regulatory (windows) fishing schedule and gillnets are being restricted to 6-inch or smaller mesh. The 2019 summer chum salmon run is coming in late, but strong tides of chum salmon are entering the lower river now.

Subsistence Management Actions

District 1:

Effective 2 p.m. Friday, June 21, subsistence fishermen are restricted to 6-inch or smaller mesh gillnets on the reduced regulatory schedule consisting of two 18-hour periods per week from:

  • 2 p.m. Fridays to 8 a.m. Saturdays
  • 2 p.m. Tuesdays to 8 a.m. Wednesdays

District 2 and 3:

Effective 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, subsistence fishermen will have one 18-hour period from 2 p.m. Wednesday to 8 a.m. Thursday with 7.5-inch or smaller mesh gillnets, as announced in the last news release.

Effective 2 p.m. Saturday, June 22, subsistence fishermen are restricted to 6-inch or smaller mesh gillnets on the reduced regulatory schedule consisting of two 18-hour periods per week from:

  • 2 p.m. Saturdays to 8 a.m. Sundays
  • 2 p.m. Wednesdays to 8 a.m. Thursdays

Subsistence salmon fishing is closed between the 18-hour fishing periods. During subsistence salmon fishing closures, fishing for non-salmon species is allowed. However, only gillnets with 4-inch or smaller mesh may be used.

Innoko River (Shageluk): Subsistence salmon fishing in the Innoko River will remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week because of the typically low abundance of Chinook salmon in this area. Subsistence fishermen may use 7.5 inch or smaller mesh gillnets.

Fishermen are reminded that dip nets are now a legal subsistence salmon fishing gear.  Fishermen may use dip nets to fish for salmon during the open subsistence salmon periods.

Subsistence fishermen are reminded that all unattended fishing gear buoys should be marked with the owner’s name and address.
