This action is needed to allow more Sockeye Salmon to reach spawning areas. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) has closed the sport, commercial and subsistence fisheries for Situk River Sockeye Salmon.

The weir count of 2,900 taken on July 3, 2018, is the lowest on record. Based on historical average run timing, cumulative Sockeye Salmon passage should be approximately 26,000 by this date. The current projection suggests the Situk River Sockeye Salmon escapement will fall short of the biological escapement goal of 30,000-70,000.
