2017 Yukon River Summer Salmon Fishery News Release # 11 Subdistricts 4-B and 4-C Subsistence Fishing Schedule

Districts Affected: Upper Yukon Area

This news release replaces News Release #5 issued on June 9. Liberal fishing has been provided since ice-out with 7.5-inch and smaller mesh gear. Arrival of the first pulse of Chinook salmon, just 6 days after early Chinook salmon passed thru the Lower Yukon Test fishery, is now triggering a closure. The 2017 management strategy is to protect the first pulse of Chinook as many of these fish are heading to spawning grounds in Canada.  Subsistence salmon fishing with gillnets and fish wheels is closing and will re-open with selective gear only, to harvest summer chum. Selective gear includes dip nets, beach seines and live-release (manned) fish wheels.  All Chinook salmon must be released alive.

Subsistence fishing is currently open 24 hours a day, seven days per week with 7.5-inch or smaller mesh gillnets and fish wheels.

Effective 6 p.m. Sunday, June 18, subsistence salmon fishing will close. This includes drift gillnet fishing in Federal public waters.

Effective 6 p.m. Monday, June 19, fishing will reopen with selective gear, including dip nets, beach seines and live-release fish wheels 24 hours per day 7 days per week to target summer chum salmon.

During salmon fishing closures fishermen may use gillnets of 4-inch or smaller mesh of 60 feet or shorter length. Chinook salmon harvested in 4-inch or smaller gillnets may be kept, however; fishermen are strongly encouraged to avoid fishing where Chinook salmon may be encountered.
