Federal Subsistence Board declines to open Federal public lands to caribou hunting

The Board determined that new information provided by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game was not sufficient to rescind the closure to non-Federally qualified subsistence users and open Federal public lands. Additionally, the Board considered public testimony about the request, the recommendation of all four affected Regional Advisory Councils, as well as information provided through Tribal consultation, and Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act corporation consultation. While the Board did not approve the special action request, it directed Office of Subsistence Management staff to initiate interagency discussions about resolving ongoing user conflicts in Unit 23.
