New Exhibition Featuring Tobias Monroe (Comanche)

Tobias Monroe, an enrolled member of the Comanche Tribe of Oklahoma, is a talented contemporary oil painter. A graduate of Apache High School, Apache, Oklahoma, he served four years in the United States Navy following graduation. Tobias is the owner and operator of TM’s Art Studio and Gallery, located in Medicine Park, Oklahoma. Currently he resides in Apache, Oklahoma, where he works full time as an artist.

 

 

Although he began drawing as a child under the tutelage of his grandmother, Tobias did not begin painting seriously until four years ago. Drawing, painting, and assembling puzzles served as a foundation for his early love of art. He credits his inspirational high school art instructor with helping to teach him the skills he needed to develop as an artist. While Tobias has experimented with a variety of painting media, he prefers oil paint because it allows for a more vivid color palette. In some ways Tobias feels his mind absorbed the childhood memories of puzzles and those memories are reflected in his art today.

 

 

Tobias begins each composition with a blank canvas and an idea. He uses a selection of sponges, brushes, and a pallet

knife to apply the paint to the canvas. He keeps his brushwork to a bare minimum, feeling more comfortable with his preferred tool, a pallet knife. Each portion of the artwork is important to him and he takes great care to ensure that individual colors are not lost in the overall design. The American bison is a common theme in his work due to the importance of the animal to his ancestors. 

 

 

Tobias’ artwork has been displayed at multiple venues including: Paseo Plunge, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; TM’s Studio and Gallery, Medicine Park, Oklahoma; Nevaquaya Fine Arts Studio, Tulsa, Oklahoma; and the Comanche Nation College, Lawton, Oklahoma.
