WASHINGTON, D.C. (December 3, 2012) – The Office of Insular Affairs announced today that Special Advisor for Health Roylinne Wada retired from government service on November 30, 2012. On the staff for the Office of Insular Affairs (OIA) since 1998, Wada led the Department of the Interior’s healthcare efforts under the Compacts of Free Association with the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia and served as the OIA special advisor on healthcare issues in the U.S. territories.

OIA Director Nikolao Pula lauded Ms. Wada, saying, “Over the past fourteen years, Roylinne has provided great leadership and direction for the Compact of Free Association health sector grants, working closely with island government leaders and colleagues to improve the lives and quality of healthcare for the people of the Freely Associated States. She is a dedicated health professional and we thank her for her exceptional service to the Pacific Islands and the Nation. She will be difficult to replace."

Wada opened the OIA Honolulu Field Office in 2003 to undertake implementation of the amended Compacts of Free Association.  She previously worked as a technical assistance specialist for OIA in Washington from 1998 to 2003.

Prior to working with DOI, Wada was Executive Director of the Pacific Island Health Officers Association and served as an Assistant Professor of Public Health and of Nursing at the University of Hawaii.
