WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Department of the Interior's Assistant Secretary for Insular Areas, Tony Babauta announced the convening of the Forum on Economic and Labor Development (FELD) to discuss a Technical Assistance program sanctioned by the Consolidated Natural Resources Act (CNRA) in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI).

The CNRA authorizes the Department of the Interior, in consultation with the CNMI government, the Departments of Commerce and Labor, and members of the private sector, to establish a Technical Assistance program to promote the growth and diversification of the CNMI economy, the hiring of U.S.-eligible workers and the recruiting and training for jobs in the main industries.

"I believe that we can design technical assistance that will help creatively address the issues faced by employers and employees alike," said Assistant Secretary Babauta.  "This forum will be the opportunity for the people of the Commonwealth to have an influence in the future of the territory's economy as well as the employment outlook for U.S. citizens, nationals, and permanent residents," added Babauta.

The forum will be held on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at the Fiesta Resort and Spa on Saipan from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
