DENIM DAY STATEMENT

 
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Sexual violence is a public health and safety issue that affects both women and men alike. It is difficult to discuss, and it often goes unmentioned, leaving many to suffer in silence. This year, the Department of the Interior (DOI) is recognizing Sexual Assault Awareness Month with the Denim Day campaign. This year, Denim Day will be commemorated on April 29.
 
Denim Day began more than twenty-one years ago, after the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped the person who raped her remove her jeans, implying consent. The following day, women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim.
 
Developed by Peace over Violence, the Denim Day campaign is observed worldwide by millions of people. As the longest-running sexual violence prevention and education campaign, Denim Day asks people to wear jeans as a visible way to highlight misconceptions surrounding sexual violence. 
 
Under Secretary Bernhardt’s leadership, the Department of the Interior is committed to engaging employees, transforming workplace culture, and preventing and eliminating harassing conduct and ensuring our employees feel safe and respected. The Department’s Denim Day campaign is intended to use the Denim Day campaign to seek active support from every employee to foster a positive work environment that limits the likelihood of sexual misconduct in the workplace.
 
Sexual Respect Pledge:
  • I will ask that jokes of a sexual nature not be told in the workplace.
  • I will object to sexual bullying in the workplace.
  • I will encourage reporting of and will personally report sexual harassment, assault or violence.
  • I know that there is never an excuse and never an invitation to sexually bully, harass, abuse, and/or assault.
  • I support sexual respect.
On April 29, 2020, DOI employees are encouraged to:
  1. Wear jeans in solidarity and in support for the Department’s commitment to prevent and eliminate harassing conduct in the workplace;
  2. Take the Sexual Respect Pledge;
  3. Take a picture of yourself in denim, holding the sign “I Took The Pledge. #DenimDay” and
  4. Upload a copy of the picture.
