2019 Yukon River Salmon Fishery News Release #43 Subdistrict 5-D Subsistence Fishing Schedule

Districts Affected: Upper Yukon Area

The Canadian-origin Chinook salmon run appears to be about 2 to 3 days later than normal. Therefore, the approximately 40,000 Chinook counted at the Eagle sonar likely represents 80%- 85% of the expected total passage at the project.

Like most of the river, subsistence fishing opportunity has been provided on the front end of the run. However, similar to other districts, in order to meet escapement goals and harvest share objectives, a fishing period was pulled, and the regulatory fishing schedule in 5-D will be reduced to half schedule. Gillnets will be restricted to 6-inches or smaller mesh in order to allow more escapement into Canada.

Subdistrict 5-D (including the Porcupine River, other adjacent tributaries, and communities of Stevens Village, Beaver, Venetie, Chalkyitsik, Fort Yukon, Circle and Eagle):

Subsistence salmon fishing is currently closed.

Effective 10 a.m. Friday, August 9, fishing will reopen on a reduced regulatory schedule of one 84-hour opening per week with 6-inch or smaller mesh gillnets and fish wheels from:

  • 10 a.m. Fridays to 10 p.m. Mondays

Set gillnets, dip nets, and fish wheels are allowed in District 5. During subsistence salmon fishing closures, fishing for non-salmon species is allowed. However, gillnets must have 4-inch or smaller mesh.
