2018 Yukon River Salmon Fishery News Release # 24 - Districts 1-3 Subsistence and Commercial Fishing Schedules

Districts Affected: Lower Yukon Area

Estimated Chinook salmon passage at Pilot Station is well below average to date. One subsistence fishing period is being pulled in Districts 1-3 and subsistence gillnets are limited to 6-inch or smaller mesh. These actions are intended to reduce harvest on incoming Chinook salmon.

Summer chum salmon abundance is above average, however selective gear is being used in the commercial chum fishery to protect Chinook salmon. All Chinook salmon caught in selective gear must be released alive immediately and reported on a fish ticket.

Subsistence Management Actions:

District 1 (including the Black River and North Coastal District):

Subsistence fishing is open from 2 p.m. Friday, June 22 until 8 a.m. Saturday, June 23 with 6-inch or smaller mesh gillnets. Effective 8a.m. Saturday, June 23, subsistence fishing will close.

Subsistence fishing will reopen with 6-inch or smaller mesh gillnets for an 18-hour period from:

  • 2 p.m. Friday, June 29 to 8 a.m. Saturday, June 30

Districts 2 and 3:

Subsistence fishing is currently closed and will open with 6-inch or smaller mesh gillnets for two 18-hour periods

  • 2 p.m. Monday, June 25 to 8 a.m. Tuesday, June 26
  • 2 p.m. Monday, July 2 to 8 a.m. Tuesday, July 3

During subsistence salmon fishing closures, fishing for non-salmon species is allowed. However, only gillnets with 4-inch or smaller mesh may be used.

Commercial Fishing Periods:

District 1 (including Black River) Commercial:

Commercial fishing will open for four 12-hour periods with dip nets and beach seine gear:

  • from Noon to Midnight, Saturday, June 23
  • from Noon to Midnight, Sunday, June 24
  • from Noon to Midnight, Monday June 25
  • from Noon to Midnight, Tuesday June 26

District 2 Commercial:

Commercial fishing will open for four additional 12-hour periods with dip nets and beach seines:

  • from Noon to Midnight, Tuesday June 26
  • from Noon to Midnight, Wednesday, June 27
  • from Noon to Midnight, Thursday June 28
  • from Noon to Midnight, Friday June 29

All Chinook salmon caught in selective gear must be released alive immediately and reported on a fish ticket.
