The Secretary and the Acting Assistant Secretary for Insular Areas applaud and support the efforts of President Donald J. Trump and his White House in ensuring that U.S. Virgin Islanders receive the assistance and support needed to recover from Hurricane Irma.  The Secretary and the Acting Assistant Secretary for Insular Areas have also pledged their support to Governor Kenneth Mapp towards recovery efforts.

To address recent catastrophic impacts of Hurricane Irma in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Office of Insular Affairs (OIA) as member of the Department of the Interior's Emergency Management Council which includes all Bureaus and Offices, provides critical information to the Secretary and to FEMA.  OIA has directed numerous inquiries to FEMA and related disaster coordinating efforts in support of the federal government's continued life-saving activities for the U.S. Virgin Islands in the wake of Hurricane Irma, all in accordance with the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act, 42 U.S.C. §§ 5121-5207.
