Capital Bikeshare Program Pilot Membership Announcement

The Department of the Interior (DOI) is excited to announce The Capital Bikeshare program, a new pilot program for employees located in the Washington, D.C. National Capital Region that is one of the newest and greenest transportation programs in the country. The Capital Bikeshare program sponsored by the D.C. Department of Transportation and Arlington County, Virginia and managed by Alta Bicycle Share, Inc., offers paying members the use of 1,100 bikes at 110 bike stations 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Effective immediately, DOI is making available 300 corporate level gold memberships for full-time employees in the Washington, D.C. National Capital Region on a first-come, first-serve basis. Since memberships are limited, please enroll only if you plan to take regular advantage of this wonderful program. Employees are personally responsible for paying overage charges, and will be liable for any lost/stolen bikes.

You may have already noticed the Capital Bikeshare bike stations on the 19th Street side of the Office of Personnel Management, the corner of 19th and Constitution Avenue and other locations throughout the District and Arlington. For members, the first 30 minutes of use is free! Take out a bike at one station, park it at another, and then go. You do not have to return the bike to its original station; the “smart” system, using a key Fob (an electronic authentication device) will record your use electronically.

Participation in the Capital Bikeshare Program not only supports your health and wellness, but also helps DOI achieve its sustainability goals and focus on making improvements in environmental, energy and economic performance, as required by Executive Order 13514, Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy and Economic Performance. So bike to a meeting, to lunch, or just around downtown for fitness! You will not only have a fun new way to travel, you will get exercise and reduce traffic, pollution, and your carbon footprint at the same time.
