NAPLES, FL-Deputy Secretary of the Interior Lynn Scarlett will give the keynote address tomorrow morning at A Conference on Ecosystem Services (ACES) in Naples, Florida.
ACES 2008 will bring together leaders from government agencies, non-governmental organizations, academia, tribes and the private sector to advance the understanding of "ecosystem services"-services provided to people by natural systems. The interdisciplinary conference, sponsored by more than a dozen agencies and institutions, will cover topics related to ecosystems such as science, conservation, restoration, resource management and development decisions.
More than a dozen organizations are sponsoring and participating in the conference. From the Department of the Interior, these include the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, Natural Resource Damage and Assessment Program and the Office of Indian Energy and Economic Development. Others include the University of Florida; National Science Foundation; National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service and Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service. The conference chairman is Carl Shapiro, USGS Senior Advisor for Science, Decisionmaking and Policy.
