Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne will be honored by the Outdoor Industry Association at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday evening, April 18, 2007. The Secretary will receive a Friend of the Outdoor Industry Award for his outstanding leadership and support of the outdoor industry.
The recognition ceremony will take place at the annual Friends of the Outdoor Industry Reception, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. EDT in the Mike Mansfield Room (S-207). More than 40 executives representing 4,000 companies of the $730 billion active outdoor recreation economy are expected to join members of Congress, Administration officials, and congressional staff at the reception.
The award recognizes Kempthorne’s commitment to active outdoor recreation as demonstrated by his ensuring that the newly drafted 2006 National Park Service management policies conserve America’s magnificent landscapes and historic sites and ensure they are passed on unimpaired to future generations. Kempthorne also has demonstrated his support for America’s national parks through the National Park Centennial Initiative, a commitment of up to $3 billion to the parks over ten years.
