Washington, DC – U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez, U.S. Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne, Chairman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality James L. Connaughton, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Dr. John H. Marburger, III, and Director of the National Science Foundation Dr. Arden Bement will announce President Bush’s Fiscal Year 2008 increased budget request to build on the administration’s record accomplishments in implementing the Ocean Action Plan (OAP). In addition, the officials will unveil the Bush Administration’s Ocean Research Priorities Plan and Implementation Strategy that was developed to identify ocean research priorities for the next 10 years along with related infrastructure needs.
The President issued his Ocean Action Plan in December of 2004 to guide federal ocean policy. In the two years since its release, much progress has been made in habitat protection, fisheries management and improving our understanding of the oceans.
