Norton Names Rock Salt as Senior Everglades Policy Advisor and Program Coordinator, Col. Greg May as Executive Director of South Florida Ecosystem Restoration Task Force

(WASHINGTON) - Interior Secretary Gale A. Norton announced today that Rock Salt, the current executive director of the South Florida Ecosystem Restoration Task Force, will become her senior policy advisor and program coordinator on Everglades issues on Oct. 1.

Col. Greg May, who is retiring as commander of the Jacksonville District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will become the new executive director of the task force.

"Rock Salt has done an outstanding job as executive director of the task force, and this new position formalizes the role he has been filling as the senior coordinator of the department's restoration efforts in South Florida," Norton said. "Meanwhile, Col. Greg May brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the task force, strengthening our commitment to coordination and cooperation with all the stakeholders in South Florida."

As part of his responsibilities in his new position, Salt will oversee the establishment of a new stakeholder advisory committee to provide input to Interior managers located in South Florida on a wide range of Everglades restoration issues. Norton announced the formation of the new committee at the Everglades Coalition meeting in January.

"The advisory committee will expand our collaboration with members of the Everglades community on issues that affect them every day," Norton said.

Col. May is retiring from the U.S. Army where he has had a distinguished career. As commander and district engineer, he has been responsible for all federal development of water resources in Florida east of the Aucilla River and in all of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Among his past positions, May served as deputy engineer for the U.S. Central Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., and was responsible for the engineering aspects of war plans, exercises, theater engagement plans, and troop construction. His commendations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters and the Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters.

"I am delighted to have Greg coming on board," said Ann Klee, counselor to Secretary Norton and chair of the South Florida Ecosystem Restoration Task Force. "His efforts at the Corps to implement the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan during these last three years demonstrate a proven ability to work with a broad array of stakeholders."
