This Departmental Manual Release (120 DM 1 – 11) updates the functional description for the US Geological Survey (USGS).  The changes incorporate the realignment authorized in Secretary’s Order 3307, Realignment and Restructuring of the US Geological Survey, dated October 4, 2010.  The realignment enables the USGS to better address the natural-resource and natural-science issues facing the Department and the Nation.  The realignment replaces the USGS discipline and regional structure with a structure focused on six strategic directions.  The changes include the following: 

-The USGS science programs are realigned and the Associate Directors are assigned responsibility for providing executive leadership and interdisciplinary program planning and direction.  (The Associate Director positions for Biology, Geology, Geography, and Geospatial Information are abolished.)

-The USGS Regional Executives report to the Deputy Director.  (They previously reported to the Regional Directors.  The Regional Director positions are abolished.)
 
-A new Office of Science Quality and Integrity is established that reports to the Deputy Director.  

-The Associate Director for Administrative Policy and Services is retitled Associate Director for Administration and Enterprise Information.

-The Director for the Office of Communications is retitled Director, Office of Communications and Publications.

-The Equal Employment Opportunity Office, previously reporting to the Associate Director for Human Capital, reports directly to the Deputy Director.

-The Office of Budget and Performance continues to report to the Director; and the Associate Director for Human Capital continues to report to the Deputy Director.
